Adults and couples
Attending therapy for the first time can be stressful for some people. Even if you have been to therapy before, meeting a new person and explaining your difficulties can be hard. At your first appointment with us you will meet with one of our team for an initial assessment. Here we begin to explore together the reasons why you are seeking support and what you hope to gain from therapy. We may invite you to complete some standardised questionnaires that help us to understand your current difficulties.
An essential part of the assessment is to think together about whether we are the best service to give you the support that you need at this time, whether we have the necessary skills to support you and if we are a good therapeutic ‘fit’. As clinical psychologists we are experts in a range of psychological theories and treatment models. However, you are the expert in the uniqueness of you! We firmly believe that collaboration, choice and trust are key to a successful therapeutic relationship.
At the end of the assessment, we will share some initial feedback and professional views about what treatment approach may be helpful (if indicated) and agree together next steps. Human beings are complicated! Sometimes we may need more than one session for an assessment to understand your difficulties and make recommendations about treatment. However, our aim at the end of the assessment is to have a ‘good enough’ sense of what you are struggling with, whether we have the skills to support you and essentially, if you think you will feel safe and comfortable working together with us.
